Heavenly Princess

I am a Heavenly Princess. A daughter of the King of kings. I want to look like one and enable others to look like one too. So I decided to name my sewing business “Heavenly Princess; sewing by Jordan Newhouse”

Let me know what you think of my site! click here to check it out

I’m thinking about starting another blog over there… kinda took my inspiration from Christa Taylor :) I know, I know…I don’t update here often enough, so how am I going to keep up another blog? Well, that’s why I haven’t started it yet. I’ve been posting here more often, so we’ll see if I can keep it up. Then I’ll decide whether to start a new blog!

This is a video that my dad made to show at our church. I am still looking for ladies to help us! Contact me through the registration form on the “Get Involved” page on my Reach Out website if you’re interested in the ministry. I’ll add you to the Reach out email list (which you can be removed from at any time).

Dress for Beauty

I made this presentation to the girls in a homeschool public speaking class

Do you want to look good in the clothes you wear? I would like to present to you what I have learned about clothes that flatter the person wearing them.

I consider an outfit flattering if it doesn’t draw attention to itself or the wearer’s body, but rather it draws the eye to the wearer’s face.

All items of clothing that I will be referring to as “flattering” are modest, but some things that are considered modest are not all that “flattering”.

For example, the dresses above would be considered quite modest, but I do not consider them particularly flattering. I will explain later.

My 16th birthday

I was published in the Sense and Sensibility patterns newsletter!  I submitted my “Pattern Story” shortly after the “My Pattern Story” feature was first included in the newsletter. 3 months later (this morning) I received an email letting me know that my story had been chosen for this quarter’s newsletter! That means that I also get $15 to spend on Sense and Sensibility patterns!!!

AHF 2007

We all had so much fun at this year’s American Heritage Festival! It was my first year “dressing up”. I spent the two nights at Elizabeth’s house (thanks again for your hospitality!).

Daniel's new pants

Daniel’s a skinny little guy, so his pants won’t stay up. I draped/drafted these for him so he’d have something nice to wear to his dedication on Sunday.

And I Quote

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” ~The Apostle Paul, inspired by God, written in a letter to the Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 10

This was one of the verses that we looked at at church. The pastor likened us, God’s workmanship, to wood in the hands of a master carpenter. I prefer to think of us as fabric and notions in the hands of a master sewer…

My 1860's Corset is Finished!!

This is the first corset I’ve ever made. It will give me a period correct silhouette for reenacting. I’m so excited! It’s actually very comfortable. I have it on right now! When I wear it, it gives me better posture.

I didn’t do the most wonderful job on it, but the shape is correct. It’s just not the most beautiful work of art that it could be :) It also needs to be taken in a bit, to make it fit better. Making a mock-up is supposed to prevent fit issues… but I didn’t do the greatest job on fitting mine. At least I’ll be able to wear it longer than I thought!

Corset mock up is finished!

With the help of Moriah, I fitted my corset mock up. It’s now finished and I’ve made it into a pattern. I included 1/4” seam allowances instead of the 5/8” in the original pattern. You’re supposed to trim it later anyway and I find it more precise to sew a smaller seam. I can’t wait to go make the REAL corset!

My back has been killing me since Monday. The best I’ve felt since then was when I was laced up in the mock up! It was like a back brace. I can’t wait to see how the boned corset feels!

Happy Birthday to Me

Today is my 15th birthday. My favorite present so far (okay, my only present so far) is my new (old) sewing machine! It’s a treadle sewing machine that my parents bought at the estate sale of our neighbor. Her name was Thelma Johnston. She asked us to call her “Tim” (her nickname from grade school.)

Corset update

I finally stopped putting it off and cut out my 1860’s corset mock up. A mock up is a “test drive” in sewing. If all seamstresses had time, we might make one for every single thing we make. Since we don’t, it’s mostly used for special things made out of expensive fabric, or especially fitted garments.

Slat bonnet

I’ve finished sewing my slat bonnet. I’ll get pictures up soon. I did it entirely by hand and it went more quickly than I thought. It was really quite fun. The hardest part was making the channels for the slats, and even that wasn’t very difficult!

1860's clothing

I finally ordered my corset making supplies! I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get started. In the mean time, I’ll work on my apron(s) and sun bonnet. I’m going to make a slat bonnet. “Slats” were used to stiffen the brim so that it wouldn’t flop down in your face. I’m going to use cardboard “slats”, which I was surprised to find is historically accurate. (Cardboard was called Pasteboard back then, but it’s really the same thing.)

Fleece Bears

Right now in Tucson it’s really hot! Because of that, the fleece has gone on sale. We bought a whole bunch for Reach Out so we wanted to come up with some ways that we could use it other than to do the blanket stitch around them to make blankets. My Mema came up with the idea to make these bears. Not only is it a great way to use the fleece, it also stretches the abilities of the girls in Reach Out!
