Headless Keynote
The keynote is over, and it the big announcements were rather, ahem, small. Apple now sells a headless Mac, the Mac mini, and a headless iPod, the iPod shuffle.
For the same price as a 40GB iPod photo, you can get a Mac mini. It, too has a 40GB hard drive, but not much else. Jobs described it as BYODKM—Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard and Mouse .
At least the iPod photo comes with a display.
But if you have something against displays, grab an iPod shuffle for $99 and randomize 120 songs in your pocket, or around your neck (with included lanyard).
I know Jobs proclaimed 2005 the year of HD, but I see it more as the year of Apple’s big market share grab…

I have one thing to say, and that’s iServ. Don’t think of the mini as a market grab (although it is). Also realise that there is a giant market for home fileservers. I can buy one of these and stick a 5 drive Firewire RAID enclosure box on it (or under it), and access it from any of my computers, wirelessly. Stick it in a closet, and I’m done.
iServ. Fileservers for the rest of us (who need to keep obscene amounts of data).

Oh, I know that this is more than market grab. There will be many current Mac owners who will add one or more of these to their homes and offices. They’ll be used for, as you suggested, inexpensive fileservers, jerry-rigged home media centers (mp3 streaming, video, photos). As cheap as they are, barring any major first revision flaws, these things should go like hotcakes to all kinds of buyers and for all kinds of reasons.

Oh, I didn’t notice this until after I posted, but I thought I’d share for the benefit of all your readers:

Sigh, the total strippage of HTML makes me frown (but probably makes your life more sane).
