Despite the way things started and ended, Saturday was a wonderful day. My parents picked us up, and we drove up Mount Lemmon. We live in a really great part of the desert. As we began our ascent up the mountain, there were saguaro cactus all over the side of the mountain. Soon, the desert plants gave way to scrub oak, and then Ponderosa Pine. Have you ever smelled a Ponderosa Pine? Its bark smells like vanilla. In fact thats how you can tell its a Ponderosa! I had fun showing things like that to my daughters. We were up on the mountain for a picnic with my parents' church. They attend an Hispanic church in Tucson, so it was a great cross-cultural experience for our family. We enjoyed singing, eating, and a hike to the small lake on the mountain. And it sure was great to get out of the desert heat for a day. A wonderful day.
